When I build with clay I usually have a project in mind since the clay properties don't immediately pull me in a certain direction. When I sculpt stone for a specific project I choose one that gets me near the desired shape and work from a maquette. If I don't have a project in mind when I sculpt, I choose a stone that has an interesting shape and let it guide me to its finished form. Rhythm, gesture and movement inspire my sculpture choices and pre-empt a specialty in any one particular subject. No matter what material I use- clay, stone, glass, shell or metal I alternately love/hate every minute of working with it until I love the outcome.
