ELIZABETH MAVRICK - Kiln Formed Studio Glass
I live in South Fremantle with my partner, Steve, who runs our Gallery and Ellie our precious little dog who runs everything else.
At this moment I am sitting in our garden at the rear of the Studio where I can hear the water flowing into one of the fish ponds.
I was born in Western Australia and moved to Sydney in 1977. In 1979 I studied Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts, graduating in 1982 before beginning my career as a fulltime artist.
In 1990, I returned to Fremantle and turned my focus to glass. Since then I have been creating and developing my skills and design ideas, using kiln-formed techniques. My passion for the north of Western Australia burns bright and most of my work is inspired by the colour, stillness and peace I feel when we are camping by a billabong or travelling on a long red dirt road. To wake up in the morning to the sounds (sometimes very loud sounds!) and a walk along a river bank is bliss. The Pilbara and Kimberly regions of WA, where the vastness, openness and diversity of the country and its people, have had an incredible impact on how I now approach my work.
I love the solitude and space and I feel as though I absorb the landscape rather than actually see it.
The glass I use is mainly Bullseye Glass which I overlay with various powders, paints and compatible glasses to achieve a "painterly" quality - I also love a little sparkle! I have three beautiful kilns, the largest having the bed space of 2.2m x 1.2m which allows me the flexibility to create large pieces.
My work has been shown in mixed exhibitions across Australia including three solo exhibitions in Western Australia. I have been commissioned by some major corporations and organizations such as BHP; Chamber Five; the Chinese Embassy in East Perth; CSIRO; the Perth Mint and the Premier's Department, Wills Building, Kings Street, Perth, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the Langley Hotel in Perth.
A large amount of my work has been bought by overseas travellers and I love the thought that my work is now in many overseas countries.
My other love is my commission work - my clients inspire me to create beautiful pieces for them and over the years my work has developed because of their unique ideas and requests.
I like to keep a low profile and prefer to work quietly in my Studio, with a little Maria Callas to keep me company - sometimes!
